The reason for the trip

We went for a weekend adventure, my husband and I, to a northern Michigan location famous for cherries, beaches, and a Great Lake.  Of course we went for all those things,  but the main event was at Dog Ears, the bookstore in Northport.  Owner Pamela and her dog Sarah were hosting author Bonnie Jo Campbell who came to talk about her book Once Upon a River.

Author Mary Jo Campbell in the chair. Bookstore owner Pamela Grath doing the introductions.

I read the book earlier this spring and loved it, though parts of it were scary and other parts were hard to read.  So it was fun to meet the author and learn how this book came to be.

Before the bookstore event husband and I traveled up to the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula looking for the ends of the earth for Karma’s August photo hunt.

We visited the lighthouse there and wandered on the beach.

We even got to climb up into the lighthouse tower and enjoy the view.

But the big event on Sunday was back in Northport at the bookstore  where I got to meet Pamela.  She and I have been reading the  blogs of each other for years now and it was so good to meet her, though we only had a few moments to talk.

And just as special, I got to meet and pet Sarah, Pamela’s dog and perhaps the real owner of Dog Ears books. Sarah met us at the door, as she does every visitor, got her ears rubbed and then moved on to the next arrival.  She has a very good job, does Sarah.

Thank you Pamela for hosting this event!  It was so much fun to listen to the author, and exceptionally fun to meet you and Sarah!

About Dawn King

I'm a long time banker, having started in the business at sixteen as a co-op student filing checks in a bank bookkeeping department after school. After 26 years in banking I made a scary decision and went back to grad school to become a librarian. Now that I've graduated and worked at a library for a time I'm facing unemployment again; economic times have created shortages in most of the communities near me. Some people say life is a circle; maybe mine is. I'm headed back to the bank to work. With a fresh perspective on all things financial.

What a treat! You get to go to a pretty place, meet a friend, and hang out in a store filled with books, listening to an author! Fun :)

Dawn, it was such a special treat to have you visit my bookstore, and I’m glad you were able to do it on an already special day, when Bonnie Jo was visiting, too. Only problem with that was our not having enough time to talk to each other. Even Sarah looks pensive in her chair, doesn’t she? She’s sad that you had to leave so soon!

I will look forward to seeing the photos you took for the photo hunt! Looks like a cool bookstore. I feel like I hear about this place over on Gerry’s blog too – is that correct?

What FUN! From start to finish sounds like you had a great time. I love stories about Independent book store owners that creatively bring together author’s, books and friendship!

Mommy climbed up all the stairs in a lighthouse in NJ. She said she would never do that again. She was exhausted!!!

We are glad you got to meet the doggie behind that book. Sounded pawsome!

Great trip! Particularly love the dog in the chair, but the photo on the bench outside the lighthouse is also really nice.
