Getting ready for the race

Tonight I met three running friends and we picked up our race packets in preparation for the Crim race tomorrow morning.  They are all running the 10 mile race.  I am walking the 8K (5 miles).

We had dinner at a local restaurant…all the pasta you could eat…yum.

And then we went outside to watch the Special Olympians.  The Crim race (named after Bobby Crim) is a huge fundraiser for the Special Olympics.  And the night before the big race lots of local special athletes run a few blocks down the same brick paved road we will begin our own races on in the morning.

A local high school band marched the athletes to the start line of their race.

Tonight the street was lined 4 or 5 deep as we cheered on these athletes.  Some were parents and families of the runners…some were people just like us, in town to pick up our packet and to cheer these people on.  They are what it’s all about, and tomorrow when the 10,000 or so runners toe the line, it’s these special athletes who will benefit.

Weren’t too many dry eyes along the street this evening.  Lots of high fives though.

More on the race tomorrow night.

About Dawn King

I'm a long time banker, having started in the business at sixteen as a co-op student filing checks in a bank bookkeeping department after school. After 26 years in banking I made a scary decision and went back to grad school to become a librarian. Now that I've graduated and worked at a library for a time I'm facing unemployment again; economic times have created shortages in most of the communities near me. Some people say life is a circle; maybe mine is. I'm headed back to the bank to work. With a fresh perspective on all things financial.

I’ll bet you’re on the course as I sit here exercising nothing but my fingers. It’s how things always get done. Sneakers on the ground.
